The cutest thing happened the other day. I have a squirrel platform on a pine tree. I put out some dried corn, peanuts, and pumpkin seeds to feed the grey squirrel that frequents my yard. Two Steller Jays came to the feeder first and began to eat the peanuts. Suddenly the grey squirrel came rushing down the tree. The Steller Jays flew to a nearby bush and squawked loudly. The grey squirrel threw his body over the feeder covering his food. It looked as if he was saying, "Mine! All mine!" The squirrel began stuffing his cheeks and running down to bury his treasured food. The jays then took the opportunity to fly up to the feeder and stuff their cheeks and flew off to stash their treasured food in an unknown secret place where the squirrel could not find it. None of them understand that the source of the food is me. When they are out of food, I will just put some more on the feeder. ***********************************************************************
In my yard, not only do I have Steller Jays and Squirrels, but a variety of Hummingbirds, Finches, Downey Woodpeckers, Pileated Woodpeckers, Sparrows, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Northern Flickers, Black-capped Chickadees,Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Robins, Crows, yellow Warbler's, Western Tanagers, European Starlings, Spotted Towhee, and many other types of birds. With this many birds coming and going from my yard, I constantly have beautiful song and great entertainment watching their behaviors.

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet - food and hair balls.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

*Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

*I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...............

Humingbirds & Other Yard Wildlife

Hummingbirds are such delightful wild birds to watch in your yard. I hear them buzzing all around. I have several smaller baby Hummingbirds this year. It is interesting that the red Rufus Hummingbird babies are just as bossy as their adult counterparts. I have three feeders in the front and back yard. That way the other varieties Hummingbirds have a chance to feed while the Rufus are at another feeder.

It was quite commical when my very old Cocker Spaniel was standing underneath the Hummingbird feeder. A brilliant red Rufus tried to scare the dog away from his feeder by moving around in his threatening flight pattern just six inched from the side of the dog. The dog didn't even see the bird but it was quite cute. Don't worry, we have never had an actual Hummingbird attack. They are just wonderful to watch.

Another time, I was doing yard work and a red Rufus Hummingbird came about two feet from my face. He was in his threatening flight pattern. I stood there quietly, just looking at him. It was the first time I had been that close to a Hummingbird and it was exciting. Well, he got bored and flew away. I have seen pictures where many Hummingbirds feed simultaneously from the same feeder. They will sometimes feed from your hand. Today I spoke to an old friend that I have not seen in 25 years. I was delighted to hear he has a huge bird cage with 60 Parakeets that he has for breeding. Parakeets are one of America’s most popular house pets. They come in a variety of georgous colors with the females having a brown bridge on their noses. All female Parakeets lay eggs so my friend John,should be able to breed many beautiful Parakeet babies that will go to good loving homes.

Some female Parakeets don’t choose to produce eggs. The circumstances must be right. If you want to breed these birds, get a book about Parakeet breeding and locate a vet who may specialize in bird breeding. A good vet can check out your birds to make sure they are healthy and in good condition for breeding as well as give you much needed advice.

When they do lay eggs, it will be about one egg every two days until they have about 6 eggs. If you have not supplied a breeding box, they will breed anyway. A breeding box supplies the needed privacy and security for the mother and baby birds until the babies are ready to leave the nest.

Emergency Care for Pets

I received some good advice from the pet emergency care veterinary clinic near my home. When our pets are having an emergency we often don't remember what we should do. Here are some tips to post in your house in case your pet has an emergency:

Remain calm so you can think clearly and help your pet.
Call you vet first and follow his instructions and explain the nature of the emergency.
If your pet has been poisoned you may also want to call the local poison control. Call information for the number or better yet post it on the frig for emergencies.
Remember, even loving pets can bite when they are injured. Place a muzzle, towel, or blanket around their head so they can't bite you. Make sure there is plenty of room so your pet can breath.

Exactly what conditions require emergency care? Here are some conditions to be aware of:

Difficulty breathing
Unstoppable bleeding
Inability to urinate or defecate
Heatstroke
Bloated or distended abdomen
Inability to deliver kittens or puppies
Loss of balance, unconsciousness, or seizure
Pain
Major trauma or injury (hit by a car, etc.)
Shock
Poisoning
Vomiting and/or diarrhea
Lameness
Eyes: injured, sudden blindness, cloudiness or abnormal discharge.
Allergic reactions: swollen face, hives, red skin, difficulty breathing, severe itching or a rash.
Diabetic: shaking, excessive salivation, abnormal behavior, excessive vomiting, seizures.

Someone sent me an email today. It said, "Did you know? Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S. - and each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals. As a result, every year 4 to 6 million animals are euthanized because there are no homes for them."

This breaks my heart. Did you know if you keep buying puppies, kittens, and purebred pets, it helps to create the lack of homes for those unwanted pets. If you want a pet, consider adoption as an alternative source. I live with three rescued dogs, two from pounds, and one from a rescue shelter. We have become a family and share a tremendously strong love for one another. I wish all humans could experience this unconditional love that pets give us. It is tremendous. You can help by:

The Christmas Puppy Poem

He unchained the dog, once so lively and quick, last year's Christmas present, now painfully thin and sick. More rapid than eagles he called the dog's name. The dog ran to him, despite all of his pain.

My Dog Ate Chocolate! - What to do

My Basset Hound Goober got into my shopping packages and found a one pound box of See's Candies. He ripped it open and bagan to eat it. My Black Lab knew it was wrong and began barking for me to follow her. I did. She led me to Goober who had eaten all but two pieces of chocolate before I found him and removed the box. I immediatly began to panic. In the past, I knew somones dog who had died from eating his family's Halloween chocolate. I knew I had to act fast. I thought to make him vomit the chocolate. My medicine cabinet did not have any Syrup of Ipecac so I drove to the pharmacy. The Pharmacist said they did not make that product any longer. They had nothing else to make my dog vomit. I rushed home and called poison control.

Poison control asked me how much chocolate he ate and how much he weighed. There is a formula for figuring out if they ate enough to be toxic. They worked out the formula. It came out that Goober would have to eat three boxes of milk chocolate for him to have toxic results. They informed me he would be all right but would have a tummy ache and possibly vomit on his own. Luckily, he only had a tummy ache and laid on my lap all evening and sometimes letting out little groans. I was so thankful he was all right. I was so thankful for the quick thinking of my Black Lab.

However, I did learn something very important about what kinds of chocolates are very toxic to dogs. It is mostly the bakers chocolate and then the dark chocolate candies. Chocolate containes an ingrediant called "Methylxanthine" which is made up of caffeine and the alkaloid theobromine. This is not toxic to humans in the doses found in candy and bakery items. However, if your dogs eat bakers chocolate, it can be lethal in the right dose. So, if your dog eats a chocolate cake, it can be in trouble. You have to either get it to vomit using the Peroxide formula below and/or rush it to your Vet or Vveterinary emergency clinic. Even though your dog won't die from small amounts of milk chocolate, it is not a good idea to give it to them as a treat. It can make them vomit or have a bad tummy ache. Give them natual, human grade, organic, holistic dog treats. Never feed dogs chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes or raisons as they all have toxic effects.

The signs of chocolate poisioning can show up to hours after they have eaten the goodies. Your dog could be vomiting, frequently urinating, have diarrhea, rapid breathing, weakness, seizures, and go into a coma. Usually death occurs from cardiac arrest.

What to do according to the "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" written by Debra M. Eldredge, DVM, Liisa D. Carlson, DVM, Delbert G. Carlson, DVM, and James M. Giffin, MD is: "If you know your dog has eaten chocolate within the past six hours and he has not already vomited, induce vomiting. Record the type and amount of chocolate ingested (sweet milk chocolate and semisweet chocolate in candy bars is not nearly as toxic as baking chocolate). Then call your veterinarian for further instructions."

Inducing Vomiting: Give the dog hydrogen peroxide. 3% solution is effective. 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. Repeat every 15 to 20 minutes, up to three times until the dog vomits. Walk the dog after each dose to stimulate vomiting.

Arthritis in Pets

When your dog, cat, or any pet has arthritis it is painful and their movement becomes limited. Using drugs for pain long term can have other devasting side effects. Some of those drugs have been taken off the market like Vioxx and Bextra due to the harmful side effects.

Two drugs that are clinically proven to relieve pain and increase mobility in the joints are Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate. It is said to be safer and better than pain killers. Here is a quote from the GAIT study: *The "GAIT" Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial - Glucosamine Effectiveness (13 Universities - United States Study)Highlights: After five years of recruiting, testing and analyzing, this trial excitingly reports, “Combination glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate is effective in treating moderate to severe knee pain due to osteoarthritis.”

These studies were done on 1,500 osteoarthritis sufferers. The participants were given daily doses of Glucosamine Hydrocholoride and Chondroitin Sulfate daily. Some also had painkillers and some had a placebo. The effects of Glucosamine Hydrocholoride and Chondroitin Sulfate were amazingly more effective than acetaminophen for joint discomfort. Other studies had the same results.

Types of Arthritis in Pets

Acute Traumatic Arthritis in pets: usually caused by trauma to the joints, has swelling and they become lame. It requires surgery to prevent osteoarthritis.

Auto Immune Arthritis in pets: is rheumatoid arthritis. The immune system attacks the joints, the synovial membrane swells and the pet is looses mobility.

Degenerative Joint Disease in pets: known as osteoarthritis. a destruction of cartilage in the joints in cartilage and have bouts of inflamation. One of the most common types of arthritis in pets.

Hip Dysplasia in pets: a type of osteoarthritis that affects the hip joints. Caused by injury or normal wear, or intection. Hip dysplasia can spread to other joints as it progresses.
Hypertrophic Arthritis in pets: is the development of bone spurs. While moving, the joint is being irritated by these bone spurs and is very painful.

Winterize Your Pets

Fall is here and we are slipping into cooler wether. Depending on what area of the country you are in, there may be some freezing nights and cold days. I live in Washington state where winters are milder than other northern United States areas. No matter where we are, we have to prepare our pets who go outside in the cold. This picture is of "Sally", who is a very special dog who lives with my friend Jodie. You can tell it is getting cooler by the picture. Fall leaves on the ground and Sally in her special coat. Not all dogs are equiped to handle the cold and need some help from their human companions.

There are a variety of coats online and in the pet stores. This is the time to look for your dogs winter coat now. If you live where it is not too cold you might start with an old sweatshirt. I go to Goodwill and buy sweatshirts for $3.00. I cut the arms off and leave just enough to cover their shoulders and upper arms. Then for the boys dogs, I cut out part of the bottom so they can go to the bathroom. By the way, sweatshirts fit dogs best if you put the front on their backs and the back on their tummies. That way, their neck area fits better. Then I either safety pin up the loose baggy areas or sew it to fit. As it gets colder, I put two shirts on them. And of course, the winter coat when necessary.

My dogs are outside most of the time during the days. Each dog has a dog house with lots of blankets and foam bedding to lay on. The bottom of dog houses are very cold to lay on without lots of padding. It is too cold and hard for arthritic dogs or dogs with joint problems. With their shirts, coats, and layers of cushy bedding, they can cuddle up and stay warm. For very cold areas you can buy dog houses that have heating units. Some people put light bulbs inside to raise the temperature. It is very important to keep out the cold winds which chill the dog and can make them sick. Igloo dog houses sell swinging doors and floor padding. You can assemple a wind block with strips of heavy carpet and nail them to the door top of wooden dog houses. That way the dog can go in and out but it keeps out the cold and wind. Face the dog house entrance away from the direction of the wind.

Water dishes need to have the ice removed daily and fresh water filled. Keep food and water dishes under a area where rain, wind, and snow cannot get into them.

Never leave a dog chained up outside in the dead cold of winter. That is cruel and you can go to jail for that. All dogs need proper shelter. If at all possible, in the coldest of winter, keep your dogs in the house. Prepare a place for them to keep warm. Remember to let them outside often to relieve themselves. If properly potty trained, they won't make mistakes in the house and you won't mind keeping them inside in the cold winter.

Don't forget your cats. They should not be outside in extreme weather either. Find a warm place inside during the winter where they can be warm. Keeping your pets healthy means winterizing their surroundings for the cold. By dong these simple things, you can save yourself lots of vet bills. Unless your dog is a sled dog from Alaska and is outside a lot, the chances are they are not used to the cold and can get sick or die if left unattended.

Feeding the Senior Dog

Many of us have senior aging dogs. We love these beautiful darlings just the same. But just like our bodies, everything is changing as we age. This is a time to get a good analysis from your vets and make sure everything is working OK. Never leave out vet care, especially when your pet is aging. How we need to care for them is different. There is lots of information on this topic to assist your knowledge. I have some recommendation on feeding older dogs. I have three senior dogs. A large Black Lab, a medium sized Basset Hound, and a smaller Cocker Spaniel. All are aging differently.

Usually, as your dog ages, they become less active. They are still hungry most of the time. They still beg for cookies. Boy, it sure is hard to feed them less food. I give each dog their own bowl with their own measured food. Treats are reduced in size, given less often, never late at night.
I try to feed two or three small meals a day so they feel they are having enough to eat. Obesity can agrevate heart conditions in aging pets so we need to keep the weight down as much as possible. Going for walks helps maintain muscle mass and burns extra calories. If you can't walk outside, try walking around the house a few times. As long as they are walking with you, it makes them happy.

Dog & Cat Skin Allergies

Many of us have pets with skin allergies. We suffer watching them suffer. I have a dog with skin allergies. It gets better and then reoccurs. My vet and all the reading I do says skin allergies are not curable, but can be controlled with medicine, diet, and good care.

It takes some effort, so work with your vet to find out what the cause of the skin allergy is. There are many causes. The vet can give skin allergy tests and blood testing to help determine what kind of allergy is haunting your pet.

These are some common causes of skin allergies:

1. Fleas are the most common cause of skin allergies. See my blog on flea control.

2. Food allergies to pet food is the second most common cause of skin allergies.

3. Allergies to pollens, grass, weeds, out door things.

4. Wool, nylon, plastic materials

5. Food additives

6. House dust, dust mites

7. Parasites

8. Molds in the house or air

9. and the list goes on.

You can rule out fleas by keeping your pet and areas the pet uses flea free. Use a good Flea control on a regular basis. Keep the pet clean. For food allergies you can do some detective work. Get your vet to do some testing to uncover known allergens. Put you pet on an elimination diet. Humans also go through a similar process to uncover food allergies. I did this and it really works.

Cats may be allergic to wheat, fish, beef, and dairy products or the coloring and preservatives in the food. Dogs most common food allergens are wheat, beef, dairy products, chicken, wheat, chicken eggs, corn, and soy. You can find out what you pet is allergic to by taking them off all the regular pet food and treats. Feed them steamed rice (brown rice has more nutrition), steamed vegetables like carrots-green beans-brocoli-squash (no onion, garlic) for at least six days. Then add back one item a day from the known allergen group. The next day, try a different allergen. Watch for any signs of reaction or sickness. Consult your vet on this before trying it. The vet may suggest a vitamin supplement as well or have other advice on diets for allery's. Some pets stay on home cooked foods and are very healthy.

Natural Dog and Cat Meat Recipes

I like to feed my dogs and cats a variety of food to assure they get some of all vitamins and minerals. In the morning I feed them a natural, human grade, organic, or holistic premium pet food, and in the evening they get cooked human food. I make sure not to include onions, garlic, grapes, grape seed, raisons, or chocolate in their food. I can ad those items to my food separatly. Here is a good recipe for meatballs. You can change the recipe by adding vegetables, ground oats, cooked quinua, cooked barley, and by sprinkling with a vitamin & mineral supplement after cooking or after in the dog dish.

For dogs:

1/2 lb ground beef or chicken or turkey or lamb

1/3 cup grated chedder cheese

1 carrot chopped very small

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1 egg beaten

2 tsp. tomatoe paste

1 cup water

1/3 cup cooked brown rice

2 teaspoons olive oil or corn oil

1/2 tsp. iodized salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Scoop out by the spoonful and roll into mini-size meatballs. Place on cookie sheet. Bake 15 to 20 minutes. Store in frig.

For Cats:

1 cup water

1/3 cup dry rice

2 tsp. olive oil or corn oil

1/2 tsp. iodized salt

2/3 cup ground beef, or chicken, or turkey, or lamb

2 tbsp. cooked liver

2/3 cup ground gonemeal

Bring water t a boil, add rice, corn oil and salt. simmer 20 minutes. Cover the meat with bonemeat and add live to the rice mixture. Simmer 15 minutes. Le cool and serve. Refrigerate or freeze leftovers.

September 13, 2008, the Mars Co. announced a recall on the following dog and cat foods. Again the FDA announced this was a voluntary recall due to possible Salmonella poisioning. The FDA issued this statement:

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Wild Critters Winter Preparation

The warmth of summer will soon be slipping into the chills of fall. We are now preparing for our children to go back to school. What are we doing to help our exquisite wild critters that frequent our yards? What about the various wild birds, deer, squirrels, etc. They all could use our assistance to make it through the tough cold season ahead.

I personally have a large variety of wild birds and a couple of grey squirrels. Occasionally, a small red squirrel frequents the bird feeder and picks up sunflower seeds on the ground. Knowing this I pour a few extra seeds on the ground for them to find. I also put squirrel food (sunflower seeds, corn, and peanuts) under a big pine tree. I keep suet feeders, thissle and sunflower seed feeders year round as well.

This year, the forest behind my house was cut down. An entire family of red squirrels and a family of raccoons have disappeared. The loan red squirrel visiting my feeder may be the only survivor. I am one of the people who enjoy all kinds of wildlife and do my best to afford some food for them all year. I try to pay closer attention to what they need in the fall and winter as food is scarcer at that time of year. One year I fed a pair of Nuthatches all winter. In the spring they brought their babies to my feeder for food. That was my reward. They went off to forage but would still come back to visit my yard. What a blessing.

How many times have you read food ingredient articles that really made you think about what you eat, drink, and prepare your food? Most of the time, with some exceptions, what is good for humans is also good for pets.

When we are armed with wisdom, we are powerful consumers. Wise consumers are starting to change the pet food industry by refusing to buy harmful pet foods for their pets. They are writing letters and emails to pressure pet food companies into changing their methods of providng food for pets. Some citizens of Victorville, CA picketid the Nutro pet food plant and brought national attention to what was going on at this factory. Many reports were published online stating that dogs & cats who ate Nutro had bloody stools, vomiting, & diarrhea as well as deaths. This public outcry has brought much attention to the fact that we need to stay on top of the pet food industry. It wasn't over after the China incidents of 2007. It conitnues today.

Most of us know we should not feed our pets chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, or raisons. These foods have chemicals in them that cause major illness or even death. These are natural ingredients of which we need to be concerned. There are many more chemical ingredients we also need to watch. Most of them we can't even pronounce. We certainly don't know what they are or if they are harmful. It is usually very confusing.

This is one very bad chemical ingredient that you should never feed your pets. "Menadione Sodium Bisulfate." This chemical is artificial vitamin K3. Also known as Menadione Dimethylpyrimidinol Bisulfate, vitamin K3, K3, and Menadione. The Material Safety Data Sheet on Menadione Sodium Bisulfate says:

CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS: 3 (Not classifiable for human.) by IARC
MUTAGENIC EFFECTS: Not available
DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Not available.
The substance is toxic to kidneys, lungs, liver, and mucous membranes. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage.

The FDA used to allow it in human foods and vitamins but now has banned its use for humans. So why has it not been banned for pet food? It is used largely in farm animal feed. They assume it is acceptible for out pets who live years longer than chickens or cows. Long term feeding of Menadione Sodium Bisulfate in pets is asking for major trouble. There needs to be testing and take it off the market until the tests are complete.

In humans, K3 can cause, vomiting, toxic liver, weak immune system, skin ittitatios, allergic reactions and much more. If the FDA banned its use in human food and vitamins, then why has it not been banned for pet food? Farm animals who have been fed K3 show up in the grocery stores in eggs, dairy products, and meats. Humans and pets eat those foods! Pet food is made from those farm animals! It's not only added as vitamin K3 but is added through the eggs & meats in the foods. So, FDA, how is that banned for human use? I'm feeling pretty bad for farm animals right now as well as our pets. What about our children who eat eggs, dairy, and meats?

Vitamin K1 & K2 are natural sources of vitamin K. K1 and K2 should be all that we and our pets consume. Vitamin K is responsible for clotting blood in our systems so we need some of it. You can find natural vitamin K1 and K2 in fish, liver, alfalfa, sea kelp & seaweeds, nettle leaf, blue-green algae and spirulina. Suddenly the Nori on sushi looks retty good to me! I purchased a package of Nori and will break it up in my dog food. Maybe I'll roll up some brown rice inside and make us a sushi treat.

Seriously, I believe "Menadione Sodium Bisulfate" is a killer. We need to all write letters and emails to the FDA, AAFCO, pet food manufacturers who use this artificial form of K3, and your politicians. It is up to us to stop this with a huge public outcry. It has already started and several brands of pet food have stopped using artificial vitamin K3 in their foods. Actually, several countries in Europe have banned it also. The United States needs a little push from the educated consumers. Keep up the pressure by starting your letter/email writing today.

Saturday I went to the dog pound. Before entering I silently told myself, "You're only looking. You have two great dogs. You don't need another dog. You will not adopt another dog!" I thought I was quite firm with myself. Well, I saw many precious loving dogs and cats. I tried to pet and talk to each one of them. There was one that stood out amongst the rest. The type of dog that you, me, or anyone else would never ever adopt. Infact, I was so positive no one would adopt this dog that I went back today and adopted him.

The Humane Society named him Shilo. He was found walking on a country road. Filthy dirty, nails curved around and nearly growing into his feet, this poor dog was infested with fleas. He has a skin allergy all over his body as a reaction to all the fleas. He has yeast infection in his ears. Eye problems, weak back legs, tumors all over, and his teeth are so infected and rotten that he needs to have quite a few abstracted. He looked up at me with his poor red swollen eyes. He didn't beg for petting or squeel for attention. He was too miserable to do that. However, he made a connection with my eyes that I couldn't forget. All the time from Saturday until today, Tuesday, I kept thinking about what a horrible life he is having. Once he probably looked like the dog in the picture above but now he is very old and very sick. I knew I had the abilty to give him a good home for the rest of his poor short life. So I adopted him.

My dogs loved him and the Basset Hound tried to play with him. His back legs are in no condition to run. He smiled, wagged his tail, and looked appreciatively at the Basset Hound. I'll bet no doggies have tried to play with him for quite some time. I made a home cooked meal of hamburger, fish, squash, and sardine oil. Then he had a good bath. This is when I saw the very bad condition of his skin on his legs and belly. This poor boy is so thankful for his bath. He kept trying to lick himself after the bath to help with the cleaning process. He wants to cuddle and smiles. Lots of tail wags. I know in my heart I have done the right thing and that God has led me to this poor lost soul. He is going to the vet immediatly and I plan on fixing what is fixable on this poor old dog. Then he can feel better and be more comfortable. He can live with us until it's time for him to live with our Heavenly Father again.

I know adopting such a dog is not possible for all of you who read this blog. However, there are many other needy good dogs and cats in the shelters who need you. Please find one and take care of them for the rest of their lives. Pets need forever homes and forever love and care. Please, open your hearts to caring for such a needy creature so it will not end up like the little cocker that I adopted. Bless you if you have done this already. As a small girl, I remember watching Art Linkletter ask a 5 year old boy, "What's the funniest thing you ever saw?" The boy answered, "My Mom had a flea in her girdle and was wiggling around to get it out." The audience roared with laughter. However, if your home and pets have a flea infestation, it isn't funny at all. This article is about some ways to get rid of fleas in a more natural non-toxic maner. A way to leave your pets and home flea free without adding health harmful chemicals.

Facts about fleas:

Fleas live in our pet's environment: grass & dirt outside, carpet, sofa, bedding, etc. inside.
For each flea on your dog or cat, there are 30 to 50 more hiding in your home and hundreds to thousands outside.
A flea can lay 60 eggs a day, and 500 in a lifetime. 50 fleas in your house in June can have 25,000 fleas by the end of August; or more! And that's not counting how many more join in when their babies grow up and hatch their eggs.
Eggs are laid when the temperatures reach 65 to 85 degrees and the weather is more humid.
Higher mountain altitudes are not compatible with fleas. Dogs & cats in Reno, Nevada, for instance, have no fleas. How nice. On the other hand, fleas in Hawaii's all year round warm, humid air, breed all year and are a real problem to control.
Flea eggs hatch into Larvae in one week. Larvae feeds on feces from other adult fleas, hair and vegetation for 200 days and then make a web called Pupa which hatches into the adult fleas as we know it in one week to one year. This process keeps the fleas population continuously alive in their environment. However, if your pets are very clean and your house is very clean, larvae will not find food and cannot continue the life cycle.
The life span of a flea is 90 days or 3 months.
Fleas can build up immunity to flea medications.
Fleas can jump 9 inches upwards or 5 feet sideways.
Adult fleas only food type is blood and jump on our pets when they need to eat.
Female fleas lay their eggs in other places besides our pets. They also lay them in dark, damp areas where there are cracks all over your home.
By the way, fleas outside don't die in winter. They do become inactive but come back again in the spring. That is if they haven't moved into your warm home where they can be active all winter.
Flea bites are not only itchy, but can cause allergic dermatitis and give your dogs & cats tape worms. Tape worms are serious so see your vet if you suspect your pet has them.
Heavy flea infestations on puppies, kittens, or sick pets can cause death due to blood loss.

So we are in for a battle to control these little buggers as soon as we see one flea. We have two options, the natural way or the chemical way. Both work but one leaves our home, pets, and yards with far less chemicals. Chemicals that we don't need in our bodies or our pets bodies.

The Natural Way to Control Fleas

1. Minimize your pets exposure to being outside as much as possible. My dogs for instance, are in a large kennel outside, with brick flooring while I'm at work. They are outside for walks at the park, and when they need to use the outdoor potty (my backyard). They are inside with me when I'm home and during cold weather. This controls exposure to fleas. For outdoor pets, this is harder to control flea exposure. Do the best you can.
2. Keep stray dogs and cats out of your yard as much as possible. They bring in fleas. I had a neighbors cat, who was always covered with fleas, in my yard wanting to play and sit with my cat. That year we had horrible fleas inside and outside. After the cats owners moved, I cleaned up the outdoor/indoor environment and had no more flea problems. It has been controlled ever since.
3. Frequent bathing of your pet helps to wash away fleas, flea feces, and flea eggs. 8. Wash your pets bedding and blankets often. The more the better. This removes fleas, eggs, larvae, pupa, and flea debris.
9. Set out flea traps at night in your home. Fleas are attracted to light and they drown easily. Put a small lamp out (desk lamp) with a lower flatter bowl of soapy water. Fleas come toward the light and jump into the water. Keep this ongoing until the flea population is under control.
10. Another flea control help that has had success in humid areas is a dehumidifier. Put it in rooms with closed windows and doors. Fleas thrive in humidity. Removing the humidity seems to remove the fleas. It's worth a try if you have access to a dehumidifier.
11. Remove carpets from your home. Install linoleum, hardwood, or artificial wood on your floors instead. Fleas have less hiding places to breed, hatch eggs, etc. I have linoleum floors and no fleas. I wash the floors and they are clean. No hidden dirt either. This is a good reason to update your flooring.
12. What Not to Use to Fight Fleas

DO NOT use garlic. We now know that onions and garlic (in the onion family) have a toxic ingredient that will kill your pet if it has diabetis. Garlic has been used in the past for fighting fleas in pets food or orally but I wouldn't use it now. We are learning more and more about garlics effects in dogs and cats and it isn't what we used to think. You would have to give substantial amounts in the food and that would put your pet at risk for health problems. Not worth it!
DO NOT use Boric Acid : also called Sodium Polyborate, Borax, Soduum Borate, Sodium Tetraborate, Disodium Tetraborate, Boric Acid, Orthoboric Acid, Acidum Boricum, etc. Again, a larger amount is needed to be effective against fleas and then it becomes toxic.
DO NOT use Flea Bombs: This toxic substance leaves poison everywhere in your home. It does work on fleas. But what about you and your pets who are exposing yourselves to the poison residue left behind? Do you want that for your family?
Be careful of some Flea collars. Some are very toxic. Check the ingredients before purchasing.

Lastly, let's talk about diet. I have read that healthy dogs and cats have far less flea problems. It seems fleas readily attack weaker and sicker pets. The 4th of July is around the corner. Many dogs and cats can't take the sound of fireworks. The sound is both threatening and frightening. I have a neighbor who refused, long after 4th of July was over, to stop setting off firecrackers at night. My dog became terrified to go outside to relieve herself. Car rides can also be traumatic. Some dogs are very nervous weather it's a short trip to the store or a long journey. My Basset Hound barks continuously but eventually settles down. I think he may fear being abandoned. He has taken car rides in his life where he was given to a new owner. Now he has a forever home and loves where he is at. I try to take him to the store, for rides, to the park. Someday he may trust that he will always go home with me; to his forever home.

Even at home on 4th of July and New Years dogs are very nervous. I have learned to help my pets by doing the following:

Play relaxing music. I prefer classical music. It works best for for my dogs and cats.
Play the TV a little louder to drown out the sound of the fireworks. Try not to watch a program where there may be gunshots as that is as frightening to your pets.
Close windows if you can to cut down on the noise.
Staying home with them to help calm them if possible. Hold them, speak in a calming voice to them.

Gardening is a summer passion for many pet owners. Poisons in gardening products can make your pet seriously ill and at worse cause death. Cocoa Mulch is one such product. It has been out for years. It smells like chocolate and some dogs will eat it. It causes seizures and death. The harmful ingredient is "Theo bromine" and comes from cocoa bean shells. Check the labels of your garden mulch for this ingredient and don't use it if your pets will wander around the yard where you mulch.

Other products to be aware of are slug poison, rat poison, ant poison, weed poison, insect poison and other toxic garden items. If you spray it, keep pets away for a while to be safe. A friend of mine bought slug poison. She asked the clerk at the store if it would be harmful to her dogs. The lady, who must have wanted the sale badly, said, "No, of course not, it's safe." My friends dog ate the slug poison and almost died. Fortunately, she was rushed to the vets and saved. Read labels and if it doesn't say safe for pets, assume it isn't safe. To induce vomit, give dogs a 3% mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide to water. One teaspoon for each 10 pounds the dog weighs. They can receive this up to three times, 15 to 20 minuets apart and walk the dog between doses.

Syrup of Ipecac can be used but is not as effective as Hydrogen Peroxide for dogs. Call the poison control and your vet and get them to the vets office as soon as possible.

Heat stroke is a big risk in the summer heat. Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water at all times. Don't leave them locked in a hot car. Cars left in the sun can be 20 to 30 degrees hotter inside the car, especially if the windows are rolled up. Don't take pets to the store and leave them in the parking lot. If the temperature is high, leave them home and keep them safe. Make sure pets have shelter and shade when outside to protect them from hot direct sunlight.

Heat stroke is a real risk and can cause death. Dog don't have pores to sweat and cool off like people do. They cool off by panting and a tiny bit through their paws. Heat is harder for them to handle than it is for their human owners. Call your vet right away if you pet has been exposed to high heat.

Signs of heat stroke are:

heavy breathing and panting
tongue and mucus membranes are bright red
a lot of thick saliva
vomiting
unsteady
passes bloody diarrhea
as the dog goes into shock the mucus membranes turn gray
collapsing pet will go into seizures and death takes place

This is a serious emergency. Treatment you can give is take measures to cool the pet off. Put into an air conditioned area. Place in cool tap water (not ice water) for a few minuets. If you have a room fan, put the wet pet in front of the fan. Cool packs can be used on the groin. Keep the paws wiped with cool water. If you have a rectal thermometer, take the temperature every few minuets until the temperature is 103 degrees or lower. Then the pet is safe. Dry them off and keep them out of heat for 24 hours while they recover from their experience. It is advisable to take them to a vet right away as there are other complications from heat stroke that a vet should check.

Treatment of Dog & Cat Ear Infections

Tuna Cat Cookies Recipe

6 ounces of undrained tuna
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/3 cup water

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix thoroughly all ingredients. Use a rolling pin to roll to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into treat sized pieces. Perhaps get a small fish cookie cutter and a kitchen shop. Bake on a greased cookie sheet for 20 minutes or until golden. Don't brown too deeply. Cool and store in air tight jar. Glass is best. Grind oatmeal in processor to make a coarse flour. 2. Set aside in small bowl. 3. In food processor, whirr tuna with the oil, and water then add all the rest of ingredients. 4. Pulse till mixture forms a ball, Pulse to knead for 2-3 minutes. 5. Knead on floured surface till it forms a soft ball of dough. 6. Roll out to a 1/8"-1/4" thickness. 7. Cut into shapes. 8. Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet , at 350 for 20-25 minutes. 9. Cool completely.

Flounder Filet (Dogs or Cats)
Ingredients
1 - 5 0r 6 oz boneless filet of flounder
1/2 cup raw instant farina rice or regular white or brown rice
1 soft cooked or hard cooked egg
1 cup mashed carrots & peas
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Small pinch of salt
Directions
1. Prepare farina (or white or brown rice) according to directions on box. Save in mixing bowl.
2. Saute filet in oil 5 minuets each side.
3. Combine all ingredients together and mash.
This is two meals for a 10 pound animal. Increase recipe accordingly.

National Pet Week is a time to celebrate the unconditional love our wonderful pets give to us. Considering the United States has 172 million pets, that's a lot of unconditional love. So this week, I'm taking my pets out for a drive in the car, making them some good homemade treats, and spending some extra quality time with them.

My dogs love to play chasemaster and hide and go seek. Of course, they love tummy rubs and back massages. I might even make them some new bandanas. Dogs love presents too. So that will be our National Pet Week. Except for one item. I have rescue dogs and we have a wonderful life. Young dogs like to chew things as they grow up. Why not start them on carrots? Carrots are very nutritious and help keep teeth clean as they chew on them. The carrot habit will last into their adulthood. Cooked carrots and other vegetables like green beans, peas, sweet potatoes, avacado, zucchini, kale, broccoli, spinich, and parsely are also good mashed into brown rice and meat is also very good and naturally healthy. BUT NO ONIONS! Onions are very toxic for pets.

Good sources of the mineral potassium are fruits, peanuts, potatoes and tomatoe sauce.

What fruits can dogs eat? NO GRAPES or RAISINS. They are toxic and will make you pet very sick. I work with a man whose dog loved grapes so he fed them to her often and as much as she wanted. Recovery Recipe for Dog Stomach Bloat

My dear little Goober is resting at home from his 22 hour stay at the emergency vet center. His stomach had bloated up dangerously. Never having seen that before, I looked it up in my book, "Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog" and found out if left untreated his stomach could twist (called torsion) and he would have it operated on or I could loose him. This usually is a condition of larger dogs with deep chests.

He now needs 3 to 5 days of a bland diet. He needs to eat 3 to 4 smaller meals a day instead of his two meals a day. The stomach has to rest during his recovery. Too much food is hard on the digestion. This is the bland food diet for any doggie recovering from tummy troubles:

3 lbs chicken boneless and skinless (I use thighs, tastier and softer)
3 cups white rice (no brown rice during recovery)
10 small red potatoes (other kinds of potatoes can be used)
6 big carrots chopped into 1 inch chunks
1 large tablespoon of McCormicks Chicken Base, or Chicken Broth, or Boullion (not enough to make it salty)
12 egg whites (no yellow egg parts during recovery, good protein source)

Cook all ingredients, except the egg whites, in large slow cooker (half the recipe for small slow cooker) for six hours
In the last 45 minuets, add the egg whites, they cook faster
Take out the chicken pieces, let cool, cut in small pieces or shred with a fork
Mash the mixture until carrots are tiny pieces and you can't see chunks of potatoes
Add the chicken into the mixture and stir
Dinners ready!

Lastly, divide the normal amount you feed in one day into four serving sizes. When it's time to feed your dog, heat in microwave for one minuet. Heat on a plate or bowl that is not plastic. Some plastics emit cancer causing toxins into the food in microwaves. We don't want that.

Bring out your favorite cookie cutters, or buy a bone & fish shaped cookie cutter in the nearest kitchen store. Apple Cinnamon Doggie Biscuits

Ingredients
1 package apple, dried
1 teaspoon Cinnamon -- (I usually just shake some in)
1 Tablespoon parsley, freeze-dried
1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
1 cup ice water
1/2 cup Corn Oil 5 cups flour
1/2 cup powdered milk
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon corn oil

Directions
1. Put the apples in a food processor so that pieces are small.
2. Combine in a bowl all of the ingredients -- can add oil or water if dough is
too dry.
3. Using a rolling pin roll out dough to about 3/16" thick (can make thinner or
thicker).
4. Using a cookie cutter -- cut into shapes -- place on cookie sheets.
5. Bake at 350 degrees for approx 20 -25 minutes (until golden).
NOTE: if you substitute corn meal just subtract about 3/4 cup from flour and add
Corn meal.

CAT COOKIES

Ingredients
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp catnip
1/3 cup milk
1/3 cup powdered milk
2 tbl butter or vegetable oil
1/4 cup Soy flour
1 egg
2 tbl Wheat germ
1 tbl Unsulfured molasses

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix dry ingredients together. Add molasses, egg, oil and milk. Roll out flat onto oiled cookie sheet and cut into small, cat bite-sized pieces.
Bake for 20 minutes and let cool. Store the cookies in a sealed container.

The Answer to Safe Natural Pet Food

The following link is to my new website. http://www.everythingnaturalpetfood.com/ After the scare of the Chinese Melamine which killed thousands of US and Canadian pet in 2007, people became more aware of what is in pet foods. Little did we know that the Chinese ingredient (melamine)was not the only killer ingredient in pet foods. Did you know that many cities, Los Angeles is a good example, take all the dead animals who have been put to sleep by veterinarians and give them to rendering plants to be cooked down for protein in pet foods. They don’t even take off the collars. These pets have been put to sleep with Sodium Phenobarbital which has been found in most of the commercial pet foods according to a study of these foods. So along with the diseases that these animals were put to sleep for, is the murderous ingredient that we feed our pets! Rendering plants also include road kill animals, bad meat from stores (the plastic wrapping and Styrofoam plates are not removed), and many other awful things.

Then we can get into the other pet food ingredients like meat by-products. This is skin, beaks & feet of poultry, and all the crap parts of animals that humans would never eat. This also includes the meat surrounding the cancerous parts that have been cut out. By-products are not a suitable source of good nutrition for our pet. Downed animals that can’t get up due to sickness and mad cow disease are hoisted by forklift and sent to the rendering plant and pet food plants. Along with many other unnecessary chemicals, preservatives, etc.

Is it no wonder that our beloved pets have been coming down with cancer, renal failure, and other diseases. Eating this daily in their food eventually causes their organs to shut down, or malfunction. This cuts years off their lives.

I for one am done with putting to sleep my suffering wonderful dogs & cats from these diseases. I had no idea I was doing it to them from feeding them pet food that said “Healthy” and “Nutritious” on the labels. I read there is a class action law suits currently pending against some of these pet food companies and the stores which sold them. Good luck to them as proving it will be hard and these companies have deep pockets for affording lawyers.

But there is another answer. Many pet food companies have taken up the challenge to make natural, human grade, organic, holistic, and some vegetarian dog & cat pet foods. They are fighting back and so am I. I have developed a website where you can find these new natural pet foods, pet snacks, and 115 books about cooking homemade pet foods, natural pet wellness care, and pet training. I know if we educate ourselves to the right way to feed & care for our pets, then we can prevent our pets from suffering and dying as a result of these awful pet food ingredients in the future. Pet Food Industry & natural pet food.

There have recently been a couple of people indicted for the Chinese ingredient in pet food that killed thousands of our beloved pets. The fight is not over. First we must find natural, organic, holistic, or vegetarian pet food to feed our pets. Some companies in the pet food industry have developed foods in these categories and they are very safe and healthy. Next, we need to educate ourselves on pet food and what is in it. Lastly, we need to continue to fight for regulations that make testing of ingredients more prevalent, etc. Another ingredient to look up is vitamin K3 which is still approved for pet foods and is an artificial ingredient. Dogs and cats create vitamin K in their intestines. It does not have to be included in pet food, especially the K3. Long term use causes health problems that can be serious. I am looking into this and would like any information that you have.
