Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet - food and hair balls.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

*Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

*I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...............

Dog & Cat Skin Allergies

Many of us have pets with skin allergies. We suffer watching them suffer. I have a dog with skin allergies. It gets better and then reoccurs. My vet and all the reading I do says skin allergies are not curable, but can be controlled with medicine, diet, and good care.

It takes some effort, so work with your vet to find out what the cause of the skin allergy is. There are many causes. The vet can give skin allergy tests and blood testing to help determine what kind of allergy is haunting your pet.

These are some common causes of skin allergies:

1. Fleas are the most common cause of skin allergies. See my blog on flea control.

2. Food allergies to pet food is the second most common cause of skin allergies.

3. Allergies to pollens, grass, weeds, out door things.

4. Wool, nylon, plastic materials

5. Food additives

6. House dust, dust mites

7. Parasites

8. Molds in the house or air

9. and the list goes on.

You can rule out fleas by keeping your pet and areas the pet uses flea free. Use a good Flea control on a regular basis. Keep the pet clean. For food allergies you can do some detective work. Get your vet to do some testing to uncover known allergens. Put you pet on an elimination diet. Humans also go through a similar process to uncover food allergies. I did this and it really works.

Cats may be allergic to wheat, fish, beef, and dairy products or the coloring and preservatives in the food. Dogs most common food allergens are wheat, beef, dairy products, chicken, wheat, chicken eggs, corn, and soy. You can find out what you pet is allergic to by taking them off all the regular pet food and treats. Feed them steamed rice (brown rice has more nutrition), steamed vegetables like carrots-green beans-brocoli-squash (no onion, garlic) for at least six days. Then add back one item a day from the known allergen group. The next day, try a different allergen. Watch for any signs of reaction or sickness. Consult your vet on this before trying it. The vet may suggest a vitamin supplement as well or have other advice on diets for allery's. Some pets stay on home cooked foods and are very healthy.

Natural Dog and Cat Meat Recipes

I like to feed my dogs and cats a variety of food to assure they get some of all vitamins and minerals. In the morning I feed them a natural, human grade, organic, or holistic premium pet food, and in the evening they get cooked human food. I make sure not to include onions, garlic, grapes, grape seed, raisons, or chocolate in their food. I can ad those items to my food separatly. Here is a good recipe for meatballs. You can change the recipe by adding vegetables, ground oats, cooked quinua, cooked barley, and by sprinkling with a vitamin & mineral supplement after cooking or after in the dog dish.

For dogs:

1/2 lb ground beef or chicken or turkey or lamb

1/3 cup grated chedder cheese

1 carrot chopped very small

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1 egg beaten

2 tsp. tomatoe paste

1 cup water

1/3 cup cooked brown rice

2 teaspoons olive oil or corn oil

1/2 tsp. iodized salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Scoop out by the spoonful and roll into mini-size meatballs. Place on cookie sheet. Bake 15 to 20 minutes. Store in frig.

For Cats:

1 cup water

1/3 cup dry rice

2 tsp. olive oil or corn oil

1/2 tsp. iodized salt

2/3 cup ground beef, or chicken, or turkey, or lamb

2 tbsp. cooked liver

2/3 cup ground gonemeal

Bring water t a boil, add rice, corn oil and salt. simmer 20 minutes. Cover the meat with bonemeat and add live to the rice mixture. Simmer 15 minutes. Le cool and serve. Refrigerate or freeze leftovers.

Adopt a Homeless or Rescued Dog and/or Cat

Saturday I went to the dog pound. Before entering I silently told myself, "You're only looking. You have two great dogs. You don't need another dog. You will not adopt another dog!" I thought I was quite firm with myself. Well, I saw many precious loving dogs and cats. I tried to pet and talk to each one of them. There was one that stood out amongst the rest. The type of dog that you, me, or anyone else would never ever adopt. Infact, I was so positive no one would adopt this dog that I went back today and adopted him.

The Humane Society named him Shilo. He was found walking on a country road. Filthy dirty, nails curved around and nearly growing into his feet, this poor dog was infested with fleas. He has a skin allergy all over his body as a reaction to all the fleas. He has yeast infection in his ears. Eye problems, weak back legs, tumors all over, and his teeth are so infected and rotten that he needs to have quite a few abstracted. He looked up at me with his poor red swollen eyes. He didn't beg for petting or squeel for attention. He was too miserable to do that. However, he made a connection with my eyes that I couldn't forget. All the time from Saturday until today, Tuesday, I kept thinking about what a horrible life he is having. Once he probably looked like the dog in the picture above but now he is very old and very sick. I knew I had the abilty to give him a good home for the rest of his poor short life. So I adopted him.

My dogs loved him and the Basset Hound tried to play with him. His back legs are in no condition to run. He smiled, wagged his tail, and looked appreciatively at the Basset Hound. I'll bet no doggies have tried to play with him for quite some time. I made a home cooked meal of hamburger, fish, squash, and sardine oil. Then he had a good bath. This is when I saw the very bad condition of his skin on his legs and belly. This poor boy is so thankful for his bath. He kept trying to lick himself after the bath to help with the cleaning process. He wants to cuddle and smiles. Lots of tail wags. I know in my heart I have done the right thing and that God has led me to this poor lost soul. He is going to the vet immediatly and I plan on fixing what is fixable on this poor old dog. Then he can feel better and be more comfortable. He can live with us until it's time for him to live with our Heavenly Father again.

I know adopting such a dog is not possible for all of you who read this blog. However, there are many other needy good dogs and cats in the shelters who need you. Please find one and take care of them for the rest of their lives. Pets need forever homes and forever love and care. Please, open your hearts to caring for such a needy creature so it will not end up like the little cocker that I adopted. Bless you if you have done this already. Dog & Cat Natural Flea Control

As a small girl, I remember watching Art Linkletter ask a 5 year old boy, "What's the funniest thing you ever saw?" The boy answered, "My Mom had a flea in her girdle and was wiggling around to get it out." The audience roared with laughter. However, if your home and pets have a flea infestation, it isn't funny at all. This article is about some ways to get rid of fleas in a more natural non-toxic maner. A way to leave your pets and home flea free without adding health harmful chemicals.

Facts about fleas:

1. Fleas live in our pet's environment: grass & dirt outside, carpet, sofa, bedding, etc. inside.
   
2. For each flea on your dog or cat, there are 30 to 50 more hiding in your home and hundreds to thousands outside.
3. A flea can lay 60 eggs a day, and 500 in a lifetime. 50 fleas in your house in June can have 25,000 fleas by the end of August; or more! And that's not counting how many more join in when their babies grow up and hatch their eggs.
   
4. Eggs are laid when the temperatures reach 65 to 85 degrees and the weather is more humid.
   
5. Higher mountain altitudes are not compatible with fleas. Dogs & cats in Reno, Nevada, for instance, have no fleas. How nice. On the other hand, fleas in Hawaii's all year round warm, humid air, breed all year and are a real problem to control.
   
6. Flea eggs hatch into Larvae in one week. Larvae feeds on feces from other adult fleas, hair and vegetation for 200 days and then make a web called Pupa which hatches into the adult fleas as we know it in one week to one year. This process keeps the fleas population continuously alive in their environment. However, if your pets are very clean and your house is very clean, larvae will not find food and cannot continue the life cycle.
   
7. The life span of a flea is 90 days or 3 months.
8. Fleas can build up immunity to flea medications.
9. Fleas can jump 9 inches upwards or 5 feet sideways.
   
10. Adult fleas only food type is blood and jump on our pets when they need to eat.
11. Female fleas lay their eggs in other places besides our pets. They also lay them in dark, damp areas where there are cracks all over your home.
12. By the way, fleas outside don't die in winter. They do become inactive but come back again in the spring. That is if they haven't moved into your warm home where they can be active all winter.
13. Flea bites are not only itchy, but can cause allergic dermatitis and give your dogs & cats tape worms. Tape worms are serious so see your vet if you suspect your pet has them.
14. Heavy flea infestations on puppies, kittens, or sick pets can cause death due to blood loss.
    

So we are in for a battle to control these little buggers as soon as we see one flea. We have two options, the natural way or the chemical way. Both work but one leaves our home, pets, and yards with far less chemicals. Chemicals that we don't need in our bodies or our pets bodies.

The Natural Way to Control Fleas

1. Minimize your pets exposure to being outside as much as possible. My dogs for instance, are in a large kennel outside, with brick flooring while I'm at work. They are outside for walks at the park, and when they need to use the outdoor potty (my backyard). They are inside with me when I'm home and during cold weather. This controls exposure to fleas. For outdoor pets, this is harder to control flea exposure. Do the best you can.
2. Keep stray dogs and cats out of your yard as much as possible. They bring in fleas. I had a neighbors cat, who was always covered with fleas, in my yard wanting to play and sit with my cat. That year we had horrible fleas inside and outside. After the cats owners moved, I cleaned up the outdoor/indoor environment and had no more flea problems. It has been controlled ever since.
3. Frequent bathing of your pet helps to wash away fleas, flea feces, and flea eggs. There is an assortment of shampoos that are safe and economical. Keep pets in the bathing water, well soaked for a few minuets. 5. Sticky based Roach traps can be put around your house and will aide in catching fleas.
6. Vacuum & steam clean carpets often: More frequent vacuuming of your carpeted areas, including sofas, will help to eliminate fleas, flea debris, and eggs. Hot steam not only cleans debris better but is too hot for fleas to tolerate. This is natural and doesn't add harmful chemicals to yours or your pet's environment. Use hot hot water for the steaming.
7. In your yard and around the perimeter of your house & doorways, sprinkle diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is fossilized remains of hard-shelled algae and is very sharp. This is something used for naturally killing slugs. It has sharp edges that tear the fleas bodies and they die of dehydration from leaking fluids. Ask for food grade diatomaceous earth as there are no harmful chemicals in this product at all. There is one for swimming pools that has chemical added to it and you don't need that. Ask your local nursery to order diatomaceous earth if they don't have it in stock.
8. Wash your pets bedding and blankets often. The more the better. This removes fleas, eggs, larvae, pupa, and flea debris.
9. Set out flea traps at night in your home. Fleas are attracted to light and they drown easily. Put a small lamp out (desk lamp) with a lower flatter bowl of soapy water. Fleas come toward the light and jump into the water. Keep this ongoing until the flea population is under control.
10. Another flea control help that has had success in humid areas is a dehumidifier. Put it in rooms with closed windows and doors. Fleas thrive in humidity. Removing the humidity seems to remove the fleas. It's worth a try if you have access to a dehumidifier.
11. Remove carpets from your home. Install linoleum, hardwood, or artificial wood on your floors instead. Fleas have less hiding places to breed, hatch eggs, etc. I have linoleum floors and no fleas. I wash the floors and they are clean. No hidden dirt either. This is a good reason to update your flooring.
12. He also recommends cutting your grass short to let in sunlight which warms the soil and kills larvae.

What Not to Use to Fight Fleas

1. DO NOT use garlic. We now know that onions and garlic (in the onion family) have a toxic ingredient that will kill your pet if it has diabetis. Garlic has been used in the past for fighting fleas in pets food or orally but I wouldn't use it now. We are learning more and more about garlics effects in dogs and cats and it isn't what we used to think. You would have to give substantial amounts in the food and that would put your pet at risk for health problems. Not worth it!
2. DO NOT use Boric Acid : also called Sodium Polyborate, Borax, Soduum Borate, Sodium Tetraborate, Disodium Tetraborate, Boric Acid, Orthoboric Acid, Acidum Boricum, etc. Again, a larger amount is needed to be effective against fleas and then it becomes toxic.
3. DO NOT use Flea Bombs: This toxic substance leaves poison everywhere in your home. It does work on fleas. But what about you and your pets who are exposing yourselves to the poison residue left behind? Do you want that for your family?
4. Be careful of some Flea collars. Some are very toxic. Check the ingredients before purchasing.

Lastly, let's talk about diet. I have read that healthy dogs and cats have far less flea problems. It seems fleas readily attack weaker and sicker pets. I have not read any studies to back this up but it is better to error on the side of caution. Yes?
