Hi, Linda,

As the coathor of THE NATURAL CAT (a/k/a THE NEW NATURAL CAT; with Anitra Fraizer), THE NATURAL DOG (with Mary Brennan, D.V.M.), THE DOG WHISPERER (with Paul Owens), and THE PUPPY WHISPERER (with Paul Owens and Terence Cranendonk), I am so pleased that you advocate and promote the use of dog and cat food with only human grade ingredients. All of my coauthors and I agree with that stand.

However, I must question your support of Cesar Millan's books and, presumably, his TV series. Perhaps you are not aware that his methods incorporate pain, fear and intimidation and have been declared "inhumane" by The Animal Humane Association; a "travesty" by Dr. Nicholas Dodman, director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts University; "outrageous by Jean Donaldson of the San Francisco SPCA and author of numerous books; and "unsafe" by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.
Esquire magazine called Millan one of the Misguided Experts of the year in 2006.

In addition to those I've mentioned, the top animal behaviorists and master trainers explain that Millan's mantra of the importance of alpha dominance in dog training is founded on old theories of animal behavior that have been long discounted as misunderstood and, mostly, invalid. Sadly, a dog who is "calm and submissive" according to Millan is, in fact, in a traumatized, “shut down” condition of exhaustion and/or learned helplessness.

Lest you think that I harbor sour grapes because of Millan and National Geographic Television's use of the title of the book and DVDs that I wrote and produced with Paul Owens, please remember that those products all came out BEFORE they used the title. (And, no, to answer the FAQ, we are not able to copyright a title.)

I suggest an online article on the subject that was published this week at: http://www.opednews.com/articles/2/Power--Peace--and-Puppies--by-Meryl-Ann-Butler-080728-237.html

Thanks for this opportunity to explain why "dog whispering" is--or should be--based on compassion and kindness, not dominance, force or the threat of force.

Sending you and all readers a scratch behind the ears,

Norma Eckroate

Dear Norma, I thank you for your comments. I had no idea there was pain in his training techniques. I certainly will look into the leads of information you stated. I personally do not advocate any forms of pain. A good example of painless training is Victoria Stilwell. She shows her training methods on TV and none of them involve pain or corporal punishment. The books you represent are also very good. I thank you again for the information you gave me.
